Collective living in Lugano: a flight over the river Cassarate

Buongiorno, sono Cristina Zanini Barzaghi, municipale di Lugano.
Vi mostrerò cosa stiamo facendo per promuovere la qualità di vita nella nostra città.

Lugano è situata ai bordi del lago Ceresio in un’incantevole cornice di colline e monti verdi. La città è fortemente cresciuta negli scorsi 150 anni grazie ai collegamenti fra nord e sud, creati dapprima con la ferrovia del San Gottardo, e poi con l’autostrada. Oggi Lugano, con la recente aggregazione di 21 comuni, conta ca. 68000 abitanti ed è la nona città svizzera per popolazione.

Iniziamo il nostro volo dalla Foce del fiume Cassarate: il cuore della “nuova Lugano”. Con la recente rinaturazione nello storico parco Ciani, questo luogo è divenuto magico e molto amato sia dai residenti sia dai visitatori.

A destra vediamo il sedime del Campo Marzio Nord, dove intendiamo realizzare un centro congressuale, con un nuovo albergo e contenuti complementari, fra i quali abitazioni e spazi ricreativi. Desideriamo anche rivitalizzare la vasta area sportiva del Lido con più verde.

Il fiume Cassarate percorre tutta la città dalle sorgenti al lago. Da confine fra comuni è diventato ora cerniera della “nuova città” congiungendo diversi luoghi d’interesse. Lungo il suo corso stiamo quindi sviluppando una nuova identità urbana grazie a progetti più o meno grandi.

A sinistra vediamo l’ex Macello, un complesso industriale storico tutelato come bene culturale. Vista la vicinanza con l’Università, prevediamo di restaurare i suoi ampi spazi per poter accogliere attività ricreative e culturali, con co-working e co-housing per studenti.

Il campus dell’Università è ora completato con un nuovo grande edificio, dove sono accolti gli studenti della nuova facoltà di medicina e del Dipartimento di tecnologie innovative della SUPSI. La nuova grande piazza, il ristorante e l’asilo nido diventeranno presto punti d’incontro per studenti, insegnanti e tutta la popolazione residente.
Lungo il fiume si potrà accedere all’acqua e ci saranno nuove superfici verdi.

Raggiungiamo ora Cornaredo. Qui la città intende aprire prossimamente il suo più grande cantiere: un nuovo stadio e palazzetto dello sport abbinati con spazi per l’amministrazione comunale, residenze e contenuti misti a favore della popolazione. Solo dieci anni fa il “Nuovo quartiere Cornaredo” era considerato come periferico. Nel 2005 è stata definito l’assetto pianificatorio grazie ad un concorso d’urbanistica, il quale prevede equilibrio fra costruzioni, verde e infrastrutture pubbliche. Qui si attesterà anche la nuova linea di tram che arriverà dal centro città e ci sarà un nuovo park & ride che raccoglierà il traffico automobilistico che giunge dalla galleria Vedeggio Cassarate: la vediamo un po’ oltre sulla sinistra.

Il fiume entra qui in una valle stretta e pianeggiante, il cosiddetto “piano della Stampa”. Intendiamo riqualificare queste zone ora prevalentemente industriali con due progetti. Il primo è il nuovo centro sportivo del Maglio che permetterà di ampliare l’offerta sportiva di Cornaredo. Ora vediamo l’ampio sedime dove troveranno casa i servizi urbani in un centro moderno e adeguato alle nuove dimensioni della città. Con la realizzazione di un edificio in legno e il riscaldamento con fonti d’energia alternative contribuiremo a raggiungere l’ambizioso obiettivo della strategia energetica 2050 della Confederazione per l’uscita dal nucleare.

Il fiume assume qui un andamento torrentizio addentrandosi nella val Colla, il polmone verde della città, dove abbiamo diversi progetti a favore del settore agroforestale e della mobilità lenta. Proprio qui si realizzerà l’ardita passerella di Spada, con campata di 100 m, che collegherà le due sponde della valle.

Il nostro volo termina qui con uno sguardo sulle vette delle montagne che raggiungono i 2000 m e sull’ampio panorama circostante. Spero di avervi potuto trasmettere la visione e le sfide che abbiamo davanti a noi nei prossimi anni per rendere Lugano ancora più attrattiva.

Collective living in Lugano: a flight along river Cassarate

Hello everyone, 

I am Cristina Zanini Barzaghi. I am city councilor and I would like to show what Lugano is doing to improve the quality of urban life and collective living.

Lugano is located on the shores of Lake Ceresio in an enchanting Mediterranean setting of green hills and mountains.  In the last century, the Saint Gotthard railway first and the motorway through the Alps later, gave impulse to a strong growth of its population.  Nowadays, with sixty-eight thousand (68000) inhabitants and the recent aggregation of 21 municipalities, Lugano has become the ninth Swiss city by population and the second largest.

We start our “flight” from the mouth of Cassarate river: the heart of the “new Lugano”.  Thanks the recent renaturation of the historical “parco Ciani”, “la Foce” is now a magical place loved by inhabitants and tourists.

On the right, we can see the Campo Marzio, where we are planning a new convention center, with hotel, leisure activities, housing and a park that will be connected to the water sports area on the lake.

The Cassarate flows through the entire city, connecting the mountains to the lake of Lugano. From border, a dividing line between municipalities, the river has now turned itself into a hinge of the “new city” and it connects several points of interest. 

Along its course, we are developing a new identity of the city, thanks to large and small projects.

On the left we see the historical site “ex Macello”, the former slaughterhouse. Given the proximity to the University, we are planning to restore the industrial sheds to carry out several cultural activities, including co-working and co-housing for students.

Now let’s see the University campus, with its large new building, where the faculty of medicine and innovative technology departments will be based.  (You can also see the construction site of the green park along the river.)  A new large square, a restaurant and a nursery will become meeting points for students, teacher and also the entire population.

And now we are reaching Cornaredo, which will be our biggest project in the coming years: a completely new stadium and sports hall, combined with a new administrative center and public spaces for the population. 

Only ten years ago the “new Cornaredo district” was considered suburban. Now, thanks to an international competition, we are developing a masterplan through which we will combine buildings, urban green and public infrastructure.

A new tram line will connect this area to the city center and a car parking will accommodate the traffic coming from the Vedeggio Cassarate tunnel. We can see it on the left. 

We are now flying into a narrow and flat valley, the so-called “Piano della Stampa”. We can see a nice pedestrian path along the river. We intend develop two projects in these area, at the moment mainly industrial. First on the left: the new football center and parc of Maglio. It will widen the sport offer of Cornaredo. Second on the right, we see the wide ground where the new “urban services” of the city will be based. A modern building adapted to the new dimensions of Lugano. Thanks to its wooden structure and carbon neutral heating, this building will help us to achieve the ambitious goal that Switzerland has set itself: to abandon the use of nuclear energy by 2050.

Now we reach the Colla – Valley, the green lung of the city, where the forest is very large. Also in this area we plan several agroforestry, sports and tourism projects. Right at this point we would like to build a long cycle pedestrian bridge with a span of 100 meters And now we finish our flight by taking a look at the peaks of the mountains, 2000 meters high. 

I hope I gave you an overview of our vision and of the challenges we will face in the coming years to turn Lugano into an even more attractive city. Thank you for your attention.
